I've had my '80 Diesel for 20 yers this year. I brought it home from Arizona during the 4th of July weekend in 1987. It's got the SD33T engine and has 160K miles on it now. As far as I know, it's still the original engine. I did have to pull the head once because of an overheating episode. Otherwise, it's original as can be, body panels and all. It's the green Rallye in my pictues.

I had mine rebuilt at around 85,000 when the oil pump failed. Mine was brown with the Ralleye stripe, but I have painted it IH red a few weeks ago.

I got my first '80 Diesel Scout in March of 1981. There was a car dealer in Bellvue, NE that was also a Scout dealer. The 1980 concord blue Traveltop had been sitting on the lot since it was delivered in the fall of '80. No one wanted the Diesel orphan. It smoked and knocked when it was started and most of the folks visiting the dealer were looking for a car, not a noisy SUV. Good thing for me however. Just what I was looking for. I took it for a drive and went home to think it over. I told the dealership they could list the Scout on IH's locator so other truck dealers would know it was available. Within 1 day the midwest IH regional sales office called wanting the Diesel Scout for the district service manager. He didn't get it, I had made a deal and brought the Scout home. Every time I saw him after that he told me I was driving "His" Scout ;). The Scout was a reliable vehicle that was a daily driver until it got wrecked in 2000 with close to 200,000 trouble free miles on it. Someday I will get the ambition to restore the best vehicle I ever bought.
